Gdańsk Chess

Chess in Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot and along the bay

Tricity chess lives mostly in tournament series. In Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz the Król i Królowa club fills its room on ul. Politechniczna with rated blitz, rapid and norm events; in Gdynia the Bałtyk cooperative’s club in Witomino and the Navy Club keep regular rounds going, and the Shipyard BHP Hall hosts the Solidarity Cup. Wejherowo and Bolszewo run club calendars of their own, and libraries and youth culture centres teach.

Chess960 at Tricity boards

Two over-the-board Chess960 tournaments turned up for the area, both in the summer of 2026. A tournament page dates the first Reda championship in Fischer chess, at Fabryka Kultury and at ten minutes plus two seconds a move, to 4 July, and the University of Gdańsk festival „In Mari Victoria Tua” lists a Fischer 960 tournament dated 25 July. No club, library or café nearby offers Chess960 as a regular evening.

In Chess960 the pieces of the back rank start in one of 960 shuffled set-ups, so prepared openings lose their weight and both sides think for themselves from the first move. Between such events the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

How this list is kept

The list holds 73 entries; 73 of them are current or wait for a newer dated trace. They rest on the central register of the Polish Chess Federation, the Pomeranian Chess Association, chessarbiter tournament pages, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, ChessPoint, the pages of cities, libraries and culture centres, and the sites of clubs and schools; every source on an entry shows the day its page was read.

Every list opens with the entry whose dated trace is newest; nothing is scored, promoted or ranked. Where no page gives a fee, a time or who may come, the entry reads “not stated by sources” rather than a guess. The source marks, the two status lines and the edges of the list are explained under how the Tricity list is checked.

Is a club, hall or series missing?

Club rooms move, class timetables change every September and tournament series pause or come back. If an entry here has fallen behind, or a club, class or series of the Tricity is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
